The Level of Technology in Germany

On every list of famous German achievements there is lots of mention of engineering and technology products and services. The Federal Republic of Germany leads the world in many ways with regards to engineering excellence. Ever since the birth of industrialisation the nation of Germany has been an innovative force in these areas, and many goods bear the 'made in Germany' logo. As a whole, products that are made in Germany have a good reputation of being well designed and of good quality. Germany has also led the world through the design of great transportation infrastructures all over the country. A well established high speed train network and the fantastic autobahn (motorway) network are great examples of German functionality through design and practical engineering excellence.

Germany is the world's top exporter with 1.133 trillion American dollars exported out of the nation in 2006 alone. Most of these products are in engineering, and a few industries in particular take more than their share of the market. Germany is the world leading producer of many environmental technology products including wind turbines and solar power technology. This is an industry which is sure to expand in the future and give the German engineering sector an even larger share of the worldwide pie. Other leading engineering fields in Germany are to do with automobiles, metals, chemical goods and machinery of various forms and functions. While a holiday in Germany (Urlaub in Deutschland) may be on many people's list of dream vacations, the tourism industry in Germany is no where as well known as the industries of engineering and technology. Germany manages to produce iconic products that perform a number of useful functions worldwide, and also leads the way in terms of innovative recycling programs and waste management solutions.

The car industry is huge in Germany and automobile infrastructure and technology are intricately linked with the country. The number of famous car manufacturers that have come out of Germany is astounding: Volkswagon, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche - really quite a list. Germany is famous for its autobahns (motorways) which are a fantastically networked system of nationwide highways and motorways. One famous thing about the autobahns is that there is no upper speed limit on most of them, which allows these high performance German cars to travel as they were meant to. The recommended speed on a German autobahn is 130 km per hour but there is no general speed limit that is enforced. What is amazing about this situation is that the accident rate on German motorways is generally better than on other highways in other European nations. One of the reasons for this low figure is because the autobahns are very well designed and engineered.

Other industries in the world of engineering and technology with a good level of German involvement include ship building, electronic engineering, electrical engineering and aircraft manufacturing. It seems that many of these industries are linked to transportation; with automobiles, trains, aircraft and ships all being manufactured in the Federal Republic of Germany. The most important region in Germany for industrial and engineering activity is Ruhr. It is here that the iron and steel industries are concentrated; industries that are at the backbone of much of the nations output.

One interesting thing of note is that Germany is also famous for its music, and that techno music was born in Germany. Surely a field that unites two great strengths (technology and music) of the German people. Due to the large number of engineering industries in some parts of Germany, a number of engineering conferences happen all over the country. For people attending these conferences from other countries, there are lots of great language school (sprachschule) courses to help them get by. Germany also has a great infrastructure of hotels (including many Hotel Hessen locations) that allow thousands of people to enjoy a holiday in Germany while they are attending these conferences.

Germany is famous for many things, both natural and man made. The entire engineering and technology industries - especially those related to transportation - have a fantastic role to play in the economy and culture of Germany. There seems to just be something about the German people that makes them good at making things, and at making them well. his strong link between Germany and the industries of engineering and technology is alive and kicking and nothing is likely to change this relationship in the near future.
